It's not really a sequel, more of a refresh?

Nope, sequel. Source was a refresh. This has new weapons, maps, characters(skins?), etc etc etc.

I played CS from when it first came out and for about 5 years after that, but I really could never get into CS Source as much as I did the original, so hopefully with this sequel I can get back into it.

The problem for me nowadays is that it's really difficult to find a good server. Everything just has all kinds of stupid mods and customizations that ruin the game. All I want is a server that plays the default maps, without having to download a shit ton of sound effects that don't add anything of value. A huge part of the game is it's sound, and it's a game that rewarded patience, hearing warcraft sounds or the epic guy all the time killed it. Oh, and all the servers that disable weapons (mainly the AWP) are just as bad.

Anyway, I'll definitely be crossing my fingers that this one comes out as strong as the first, and at least when it launched there will be plenty of unmodded servers to play on, at least for a little while.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is Valve's new version of Counter-Strike. Valve was quick to make clear that this wasn't "CS2" (or whatever that even really means) but rather a a multi-platform team based FPS similar to its predecessors, Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and Counter-Strike: Source. It is designed on the updated Source Engine, but is not built off of Counter-Strike: Source and due out in early 2012 with beta access beginning this fall. It will maintain the traditional de_ and cs_ map types and would not include new game modes.

Course don't get me wrong here, I figure it's splitting hairs whether to consider this game a sequel or not. But considering right off the bat they've got people playing in Dust, this feels more like overhaul than a full on sequel.

    soooo

tf2 must be an "update" of tf classic, right? I mean it's got such as 2fort and badlands in it

Well I'd argue that TF2 differs from TFC in a lot of fundamental ways, where as this Counter-Strike sounds like it's trying to stay pretty close to its source material.

If you're zeroing in on my "But considering right off the bat they've got people playing in Dust..." quote, then let me clarify that I meant that more in context with the quoted text to demonstrate this is sticking pretty close to what we expect from Counter-Strike, as Dust is practically synonymous with the game. Wasn't trying to say that any shooter that includes maps from its predecessors shouldn't be considered a sequel.

how different does a sequel have to be to be a sequel and not an update?

"CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more." sounds like a new game to me

I mean the fact that it's being developed by an outside studio and targeted at psn and xbla in addition to steam makes me think that's probably why valve is positioning it as "not counterstrike 2"
