Super Mario Crossover gets even better

Maybe you recall when we introduced you to Exploding Rabbit’s Super Mario Bros. Crossover, a Flash-based game that introduces several classic NES game characters to the even more classic Super Mario Bros. game, with all their unique movement styles and power-ups intact. It’s crazy fun, and probably just what your 8-year-old self dreamed of.

Well, Exploding Rabbit has hardly been resting on their laurels, they’d added a few characters to the game since we first wrote on it, and now today they’ve released Super Mario Bros. Crossover 2.0. Their own copy way undersells the game, stating simply that it “recreates the original Super Mario Bros. and allows you to play it as characters from other games.”

Indeed, the list of characters is lengthy this time around: Now you have Mario, Luigi, Demon from Retro Game Challenge’s Demon Returns/Super Demon Returns, Link, Dark Link, Samus, Dark Samus, Simon Belmont, Trevor Belmont, Mega Man, Proto Man, Rock – Mega Man’s civilian identity, Bass, Dr. Wily, Bill Rizer, Lance Bean, RD-008 otherwise known as the Probotector, Ryu Hayabusa, Haggle Man – also from Retro Game Challenge, and both tank models from Blaster Master, Sophia III and Sophia J7.

Even more fun, on top of the massive list of characters, this time around the game even adopts several different graphical styles so that both the backgrounds, enemies and even some player characters appear as if they were on various consoles, from Game Boy to Super Nintendo, and sometimes just using different Mario tilesets.

The whole thing is really very impressive, and a total blast to play. They’ve even tightened up some of the physics issues in the game, so that it plays even more accurate to the original Super Mario Bros.

Ultimately, Exploding Rabbit really outdid itself with the new Super Mario Bros. Crossover. You really want to give this game a try.
