XCOM: Enemy Unknown is strategic re-imagining

Game Informer has just broken some of the best news for old-school PC gamers ever. In their upcoming February issue, they’ll be detailing the newly-announced XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which will be a strategy-game re-imagining of the original X-Com, which as any PC gamer from the 90s will tell you is one of the best games of all time.

The game will be published by Take2Games and developed by Firaxis, best known for its recent work in the Civilization series. This is a completely separate game from 2K Marin’s previously announced XCOM shooter, and it is unclear where this announcement leaves that project.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown sounds like what series fans have wanted for years. The title is absolutely a strategy game, putting players in the role of commanding an global anti-alien strike force, identifying threats, protecting citizens and reassuring national leaders, as well as developing new technologies, plotting out bases and commanding battlefield tactics to keep troops alive, minimizing collateral damage and recovering mysterious alien technology.

“It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-Com with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-Com,” said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. “We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-Com such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-Com fans and newcomers to the franchise.”

To editorialize briefly: We can’t freakin’ wait.
