This week, Valve plans on releasing the Über Update, “the biggest, most ambitious update” in the history of its flagship shooter, Team Fortress 2. While the focus – as players can tell by its name – is on the Medic class, there is a variety of additions to several other classes as well.
The first part of the Über Update, as detailed today on the game’s site, is Mafia-themed, detailing three new items each for the Heavy and Spy classes, a new Payload map, and an announcement that the game will be free for the next week – though that last part isn’t really Mafia themed so much as it is playing-for-free-themed.
One of the biggest pieces of the update being teased however, is an official “Meet the Medic” video, as noted in this cryptic statement:
1.) It IS a “Meet the” short.
2.) It involves ONE of the two remaining classes.
3.) It’s NOT the Pyro.
4.) It’s the MEDIC.
Valve’s various “Meet the …” videos have been hugely popular since the start of the game’s marketing efforts in May of 2007, but the time and cost involved in producing them has kept Valve from rolling them all out at the same time, or even producing them in a speedy manner. However, Valve has taken to using the shorts as a way of not only improving the technology for the game, developing better facial animation and other elements, but as a means of exploring a way to develop their own feature films.
Further aspects of the Über Update will be released throughout the week, and we’ll keep you posted on the notable ones. For more details, check out the game’s website for the nitty gritty.
