Valve caps off TF2′s Über Update with medic gear, video

Here’s the news Team Fortress 2 players have been waiting all week for. And no, not the news that TF2 is now free to play, that was something else!

The main thrust of the update was, of course, to promote the Medic class and give them some new equipment.

A new medigun, of course, which heals faster and charges ubers faster AND lets medics move as fast as their heal target, while its uber increases healing by 300% and grants immunity to movement-impairing effects, but prevents overhealing. Medics can also get their hands on a bust of Hippocrates, which lets them see enemy health, and a new syringe gun, that grants a movement speed bonus based on how much ubercharge they have, capped at 10%, which incidentally, is also its damage penalty.

That may be a little underwhelming, but then there’s also this:

Apparently the Heavy has a baboon heart now.

Question: has the console version been updated at all to make it the uber hat simulator that the PC version has become or is it just a standard FPS?

  2. faits's Avatar faits says:

    answer: no

  3. Dan's Avatar Dan says:

    Ok thanks.

  4. faits's Avatar faits says:

I'm not 100% certain but I think the only 'update' the 360 version got was the ability to limit the number of any particular class in a game and to turn crits off.

  5. Alidar's Avatar Alidar says:

Valve has said that as soon as they're done updating the PC game, they'll go back and update the 360 version in one big patch, or something like that.

So I think Valve is pretty much saying they're never going to update it.

  6. Dan's Avatar Dan says:

I'll be honest online gaming with the heathens is not my thing but you guys talk about this game so much I'd like to try it out for myself. Of course I'll wait until they update it if they ever do since I like hats as much as the next guy.

  7. Alidar's Avatar Alidar says:

If Valve ever updates the 360 version, I don't think it'll be before 2019 at the earliest, so I hope you're not too eager to play it.

  8. Dan's Avatar Dan says:

    No I can wait.

  9. mmd's Avatar mmd says:

i doubt the xbox game will ever be updated. afaik Valve has some big disagreements with Microsoft over how dlc should be handled

now that tf2 is free everyone should play it. I wish I wasn't away for the weekend so I could try the update + kick new player butts

  10. faits's Avatar faits says:

the 360 version won't ever be updated

until about 2009 they kept saying 'yeah we're waiting to bundle a bunch of stuff together.'

at this point, that bunch of stuff it probably well over five or six gigabytes in size

    that's not going into a 360 patch

  11. faits's Avatar faits says:

valve could have easily used their free update to patch in the first big content update (like add in payload or whatever) but they didn't, because they assumed microsoft would bend and allow them to do as many free updates as often as they wanted. so (like I said earlier) I think they blew their free update on adding some extra options to game creation

  12. Dkittels's Avatar Dkittels says:

At this point it's pretty much technically impossible for these updates to be brought to 360 anyways. The 360 has 512 MBs of RAM -- because there are no limitations on what weapons or hats you can equip in game, what colors they can be painted, etc, they potentially all have to fit in to memory. There's also been a lot of voice clips added in to the game since launch, which also have to sit in memory. Maps have gotten bigger and more detailed, and modes like Payload have been added that have multi stage maps with no loading between them -- also meaning they all need to sit in memory. The modes have also been designed with TF2's 12 vs 12 balance in mind, but the 360 version only supports 8 vs 8. Much of the new content has also come through the community, with revenue sharing done between Valve and content creators -- something XBox doesn't really have a system for, nevermind that Microsoft would want a split of that action too.

Basically, TF2 on 360 will never ever see this stuff.

Yeah right. People said that Duke Nukem Forever would never release, and they were wrong. So TF2 will be updated on the 360 too! And it'll also probably take 13 years, be horribly dated, suck, and release about 10 years after people stopped caring.

    but there will be HATS
