Today saw the release of Capcom’s follow up to their successful port of Street Fighter IV for the iPhone, in the form of Street Fighter IV Volt: Battle Protocol.
The original iPhone version of Street Fighter IV was a big deal, not only due to its status of being a huge IP, but also because it proved that a fighting game could be done using virtual controls. Since its release, Capcom has updated the game with new features and new controls, and this has kept it at the top of the heap when it comes to iOS games.
Now with Street Fighter IV Volt, Capcom has done more of the same, that is, released the same game with minor upgrades as a full game. In this case, Street Fighter IV Volt has three new characters – Cody, Balrog and Vega. The game also features online multiplayer over WiFi, which was conspicuously absent from the initial release.
The multiplayer works exactly like the game’s big brother on the PS3 or Xbox 360, which allows gamers to either seek out a challenge, or allow other players to challenge them as they work their way through Arcade mode.
Street Fighter IV Volt also features a new mode called Wandering Warrior. This mode allows players to create an avatar for their multiplayer profile, and level it up like in an RPG. While facing an opponent either online or locally, your avatars will mix it up as well. You can earn special points during these multiplayer matches and unlock new icons and upgrades to your avatar.
To celebrate the game’s release, Capcom is holding an incremental sale, where the price will increase by a dollar a day, until it reaches its normal price of $6.99. As of today’s posting, the game is only a buck. At that price, it’s worth picking up.
