UPDATE 2:

New details have emerged thanks to a Gamestop product description. We’re looking at 2 campaigns – 1 a solo player experience and the 2nd is a completely different Co-Op experience. Portal puzzles with TWO PLAYERS?? Sign me up now!

Taken from Gamestop:

“Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007′s Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.”

UPDATE:

Portal 2 has been announced!

Next months cover for gaming magazine Game Informer was revealed today on their website – revealing that indeed all the hoopla around these Portal updates has been about Portal 2.

According to release information from Steam – the game which is due to be released this holiday season as a stand alone title will feature a new antagonist named Cave Johnson, whom Portal 1 players will remember is the deceased President of Apeture Science – the corporation that was using you as a test subject in the first game. How will a dead man become your enemy? Simple – his mind was transferred into a computer, an act that has slowly driven the man insane.

From leaked images and speculation it appears that this new game will take players out of the confines of Apeture Science and into the outside world. No word if Glados will make a return – but most gamers know that the homicidal machine is “still alive”.

More information should be available next week at GDC – so be sure to stay tuned.

(Original Story follows)

Weird things are happening in the PC version of Portal as Valve has been adding new updates for the past couple of days.

Yesterday a new achievement was added called “Transmission Received” and idle gamers with a bit of time on their hands dug through the new files and found some odd morse code files that once translated turned into a slew of hidden images.

Today the game was updated once again with what seemed to be nothing much – but it was later discovered that Valve has added a completely new ending to the game.

WARNING SPOILERS – WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK

So what does this all mean? Is this Valves way of announcing Portal 2? Taking an unheard of route of announcing their next game in their current title?

Stay tuned as more information is bound to be coming soon.
