Fallout: New Vegas coming this fall

Fallout: New Vegas coming this fall

Feb 4, 2010

“War never changes,” is the familiar refrain intoned in the teaser trailer for the next big Fallout game, announced by publisher Bethesda Softworks today to be released this fall.

The game is not an add-on, but a stand alone title in the Fallout series – though Bethesda’s head of marketing and communications Pete Hines has stated the game is not technically Fallout 4, but merely another game in the Fallout universe.

Nothing has been stated yet regarding the game’s plot. The trailer only depicts Vegas at night, and an armored stranger bearing a tattered New California Republic flag – Fallout followers can make of that what they will.

The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which fits Hines’ explanation to gaming blog Kotaku last year that the game would be an RPG, since Obsidian has mostly RPG experience considering their development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and the upcoming Alpha Protocol.

This leaves Bethesda’s in-house team free to work on other projects, which traditionally, has only worked on one big game at a time. Since they seem to be on an every-other-year pace for releases, with Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2006 and Fallout 3 in 2008, we may be looking at another major release this year from Bethesda alongside New Vegas, which the company hasn’t managed previously.

Fallout 3 being my hands down favorite game of 2008 - I think it is safe to assume that I'll be picking this one up as well.

Obsidian may have a rough track record of picking up previous game franchises (KOTOR 2 anyone?) - but I have enough faith that this game should turn out pretty good.

I'm willing to give Obsidian some leeway when it comes to KotOR 2 -- they clearly weren't given enough time, and were actually on track for a great sequel until everything started falling off the rails the closer you got to the end of the game.

    But yeah, we'll see.

That - and the fact that I still loved KOTOR 2 despite the flaws - is why I'm looking forward New Vegas. Hopefully it is more on the side of a "new full game" and less on the "expansion" side.

Though from the looks of it, it really may be more of an expansion.

I would be pretty excited about this game, but considering the fact that my copy of Fallout3 GOTY remains a patch-less, sixty dollar coaster, I have a LOT of trouble justifying giving these guys any more money.

Just don't buy it for the PS3 and you should be fine.

I've already said this many times, but any company that thinks it's cool to release a broken product on any platform and then leave everyone who bought it for that platform high and dry doesn't deserve my money. They don't deserve anyone's money, because if people keep buying their games despite this practice they've got absolutely no incentive to knock it off.

Let's say you're a guy who likes firestone tires. You buy tons of firestone tires and are happy with them. Then, firestone tires on fords start exploding. In this hypothetical, firestone does absolutely nothing about this and the government doesn't step in to make them (in reality when this happened there were lawsuits and etc)

do you keep right on buying firestones because they were exploding on fords and you drive a honda? Like, it's cool that all those ford drivers had their tires explode and firestone told them to piss up a rope because mine didn't, so I'll keep patronizing firestone.

I will probably continue to buy Bethesda games because I really enjoy them despite their technical flaws.

as colbert would say, "I got mine."

technical flaws and all, i still find bethesda as one of two companies that really keep me playing games these days, when time to play them is so limited. bioware, natch, is the other.
