These days it seems like everyone is clamoring for a piece of the mobile game space, and Amazon.com has apparently thrown their hat into the ring. The splash page for the Kindle Development Kit refers to this as “active content,” but it also includes a picture of a Kindle running chess.
Consumer sentiment towards Amazon’s digital reader has been mixed, with its high price — driven by the inclusion of ‘free’ whispernet which allows always-on downloading of content — providing a stumbling block to adoption. Their selling point to developers seems to hinge on that whispernet functionality, though Kindle users will not be able to directly download games that are larger than 10mb. Anything bigger than that will have to be downloaded to a computer and then transferred.
Rumors abound of big-name developers being ready to jump on board though, including the proverbial ten ton gorilla Electronic Arts.
The Kindle Development Kit is slated for beta next month.
