World of Goo: Wiiware's killer app?

by Surly Yerby

I took a chance today and picked up World of Goo on WiiWare for 1500 spacebucks (or $15 in Earth dollars) based on some positive reviews.

The game is really quite unique, and is of such a high quality in presentation that you’d think Nintendo themselves made it. It is self-described as a physics-based puzzle game, and I can’t really come up with good words to explain it beyond that.

Your goal in each level is you get as many Goo Balls to the pipe (usually suspended in the air) as you can. The Goo Balls form these clusters that you can use to build structures. The first level is as easy as building the structure upwards into the pipe. But later levels come up with some pretty tricky obstacles for you to build around and it introduces some really cool physics elements along the way.

The game reminds me of Boom Blox in some ways because of its heavy use of physics, however, I find this game much more rewarding. The game is really well presented and has a pretty neat art style. There was this part where I had two gates above me to open, and I couldn’t figure how in the world I would open it until I realized the red orbs nearby could act as balloons if attached to the far end of each gate, causing it to float upwards and pivot open. For some reason this made me think of Little Big Planet (since its also physics driven) and it just made me smile when I figured it out.

You should really try it out. Its quite a good game and honestly I’m ready to go back to it.
